An American gentleman

Last week marked a special milestone—my first full year working and living in London. It seems like only yesterday that I stepped off the train at Paddington Station, suitcase in hand, my heart a mix of excitement and nerves. I remember scanning the city skyline from my taxi window, feeling both overwhelmed and hopeful. I’d left behind the familiar comforts of home to chase adventure in a city famed for its restless energy and endless possibilities. London, with its rich history and modern allure, felt like the perfect canvas for a fresh start.

Exploring Culinary Wonders

This city is a cosmopolitan gem, brimming with extraordinary restaurants, bustling theatres, captivating art galleries, and lively nightclubs. Every neighbourhood has its own flavour, from the opulent streets of Mayfair to the artsy buzz of Shoreditch. For me, the city’s dynamic food scene stands out as a highlight. Through my work, I’ve been fortunate enough to dine at some of the capital’s most prestigious Michelin-starred venues—experiences I never imagined I’d have when I first arrived.

One of the most memorable evenings was at Gordon Ramsay’s flagship restaurant. I’ll never forget being greeted by immaculately dressed waitstaff and ushered to a candlelit table for two. The tasting menu was a masterclass in creativity and technique: each course arrived like a tiny work of art, with delicate flavours and impeccable presentation. The atmosphere buzzed with quiet excitement, and I savoured every bite, grateful for the generosity of my client who made it all possible.

Another unforgettable dining adventure took place at Le Gavroche, the legendary two-Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by Michel Roux Jr. The setting was intimate, with soft lighting and elegant décor that created a sense of occasion from the moment we walked in. The service was flawless yet warm, making us feel both pampered and at ease.

The highlight was undoubtedly the Grilled Scallops with Clam Minestrone. The scallops were seared to perfection—tender and sweet—resting in a delicate, aromatic broth that balanced the richness of the shellfish with a subtle herbal freshness. Paired with a glass of chilled white Burgundy, every mouthful was a celebration of classic French technique and modern British flair. The experience lingered long after the meal ended, setting a new standard for fine dining in my mind.

The People Who Make It Special

As I continue to explore, I’m captivated not only by the city’s culinary treasures but also by the vibrant tapestry of people I meet along the way. Each client brings their own stories, backgrounds, and reasons for being in the city. Tonight, I was especially looking forward to meeting Frank—a charismatic visitor from Chicago who’d just arrived the day before. He was eager to make the most of his trip, seeking good company, great food, and a bit of fun in one of the world’s most exciting cities.

Frank told me how much he admired London’s sense of adventure and the dazzling array of attractions on offer. He was particularly impressed by the diversity and beauty of the women who call this city home. We quickly found common ground—Frank is a big fan of dancing and nightlife, and I rarely need an excuse to hit the dance floor. We swapped stories about our favourite clubs, and I promised to show him a few hidden gems that locals love, but tourists rarely find.

Over the past year, I’ve met quite a few American clients—especially from the Midwest and West Coast—and I’ve genuinely enjoyed their company. They’re unfailingly generous and warm-hearted, with a refreshingly open sense of humour and a knack for making every evening feel special. There’s a certain energy and enthusiasm that often turns an ordinary night into a memorable adventure. Whether it’s splurging on a fabulous meal or going above and beyond to ensure I’m comfortable, they never seem to do anything halfway. I’ve always felt appreciated and respected, which makes my work all the more rewarding.

When I mentioned that I’d never visited America, Frank’s eyes lit up. He insisted that I should visit Chicago and promised to show me around his favourite neighbourhoods, from the glittering city centre to the shores of Lake Michigan. He even offered to send me a plane ticket and host me in his high-rise apartment the next time he has time off—a gesture that left me both flattered and excited about the possibilities ahead. The prospect of discovering a new city with someone I’ve come to like is just one of the many unexpected joys this job has brought into my life.
